Our Mission is to build community to strengthen families caring for orphaned and vulnerable children. Orphans Know More breaks the cycle of poverty, invests in education and promotes sustainable development.
A child is not a number or a statistic. OKM assists children and families to be seen uniquely; each person facing their own loss and finding restoration of hope together.
OKM works to strengthen Ugandan families adopting children and supporting vulnerable families. OKM works to support families, so that institutions are not needed. Some of the ways we support families are through; improving housing, provide clean water, creating access to medical treatment, empowering families to create sustainable food sources and, the utilization of appropriate technology.
OKM assists and equips families and children to develop their potential. We do this by sponsoring education for all children at primary, secondary and vocational levels. Children are amazingly resilient but repeated suffering, tragedy and loss can crush hopes and aspirations for a future. OKM works with trauma and grief counsellors and a social worker to provide care and equip children and their families with the tools to regain their hope and develop their God-given potential.
What We Do
Orphans Know More supports African families adopting orphans. We have a personal relationship with the families we work with. Orphans Know More was established in 2005 when we began supporting Ugandan families working alongside those infected and affected by HIV/ AIDS.
OKM sponsors the education of all the children within our families, equipping each one to develop their unique potential. We sponsor education at primary, secondary and vocational training levels. We have also helped a few young people with partial grants/loans to complete university.
Provide Clean Water
Clean water is a basic human right. Boiling water using charcoal is expensive and damaging to the environment. OKM introduces tablets and water filters to purify water as well as rainwater harvesting to collect rain from the roof into large tanks during the rainy season. These measures save money, the environment and time.
OKM work together with the local community to repair or build new houses for the neediest families. Through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, OKM staff identified families who qualified and 80 new homes were built.
Agriculture and Food Production
Families, communities and schools have benefited through distributing income-generating trees, coffee plants and improved seed distribution and training in agriculture. For several years a trained agriculturalist assisted our families and some now grow most of their own food.
Income Generation and Micro Finance
Small loans, business coaching and advice that we provide are helping some widows and families become more self-sufficient. More of the young people are starting up small businesses.
AIDS devastates families, and many of the widows and some of the children are HIV positive. Anti-retroviral drugs are making a huge difference. There are other common diseases like malaria and more rare conditions such as epilepsy. We assist with a medical fund to help with treatment and associated costs such as transport when needed.
Whether it’s a simple water filter, a rainwater harvesting tank, a new long lasting mosquito net, a solar powered lantern, or a smokeless oven appropriate technology when introduced carefully can make a huge impact. We would like to see more of these tools be made available and small businesses developed around them.
It is our hope that people will become linked with developing communities across the world sharing support and expertise as resourceful local people lead the way in restoring human dignity and flourishing. Join us in working together to give orphans a face, a family, and a future!
